this morning more than 20 million people recovering after relentless flooding submerged the south. >> this puts the fear of god in ya. >> reporter: flooding conditions in texas turning deadly. police in johnson county near ft. worth saying two adults and a 4-year-old boy swept away as they tried to get out of their vehicle which was stuck in raging waters. the man and woman survived but rescuers located the boy's body hours later. he was reportedly just weeks away from his 5th birthday. >> it's a terrible, demoralizing feeling. it ain't a fire but a close second. >> reporter: the houston area inundated. two feet of rain falling in days. the ground so saturated this tree toppled in this kingwood neighborhood after storms hit the area. and the san acito river swelling to nearly 78 feet above sea level, 35 feet higher than normal. >> i lost everything. everything's flooded. all my things.

i got my dogs though. i'll relocate for sure. >> what do you do next? >> start over. >> reporter: the region seeing 800% its normal rainfall just in the last week. some relief is in sight. less rain, hopefully this water will begin to recede, allowing people to get into their homes and begin the long process of cleaning up, robin. >> robin: it is a long process. thank you. we're gonna get to the next severe weather outbreak. ginger is in oklahoma city, near a storm shelter for tornados. good morning to you, ginger. >> ginger: good morning, robin. this is the type of day you need to be in a rated storm shelter or under ground to survive the multiple intense long track tornados. this is a personal shelter in a garage here in oklahoma city. that's all it takes to save your life. this will be a high risk,

highest level of risk the storm prediction center puts out. this storm doesn't stop. it moves into indiana, ohio, tomorrow. we'll get into all of that coming up. it happens later this afternoon and tonight, george. we'll be here chasing it and all oefrb it. >> george: thanks. the latest on donald trump's criminal trial. aaron katersky is at the courthouse. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, george. before any testimony, the judge held donald trump in contempt. this time for violating the gag order with a statement he made about the jury implying it's noted fair. the judge fined trump $1,000 but said the fines don't appear to be working and he threatedened to throw him in jail. donald trump comes back to new york after he came from florida, mocking fulton county district attorney fani willis over a romance that forced another off the georgia election case and describing special counsel jack smith. in new york he is charged with

falsifying business records related to a hush payment to stormy daniels. the jury will soon have a look at the ledger that characterized the payment as a legal expense which prosecutors said was trump's way of concealing it from voters. the defense has said trump wanted to protect his family, noted his campaign. but on friday his loyal aide, hope hicks testified, i think mr. trump's opinion was it was better to be dealing with it now and that it would have been bad to have that story come out before the election. at that point hicks broke down in tears. trump watching from the defense table. the judge calling for a break. on cross-examination, hicks said trump didn't want anyone in his family to be hurt or embarrassed by anything that was happening on the campaign. the morning the wall street published a story about the payoff of karen mcdougal hicks testified trump was concerned it would be viewed by his wife and wanted me to make sure the newspapers weren't delivered to their residence that morning. did he also ask you whether you thought it was likely to affect the campaign, hicks was asked? she responded everything we talked about was about whether or not there was an impact on

the campaign. the jury will now hear from others who worked for donald trump and who were part of the paper trail that's central to this first trial of a former american. george? >> george: thanks. trump in the courtroom right in the middle of a presidential race. we have a new poll. abc news with a look at how voters are leaning three weeks into the trial, six months from election day. rick klein is here. >> if you want to see, look at this poll. 20% of trump supporters say they might reconsider that or withdraw their is support if he convicted. every vote matters. 46/44. just a two point edge. when you add in the third party candidates. bobby kennedy starting to get some traction. 12% of voters supporting bobby kennedy jr. our poll suggests more of those are trump supporters that kennedy is getting than biden so it might be kennedy is helping

biden a bit more than donald trump. these issues are just so stark, george. a big big advantage for donald trump on the issues that seem to matter to most. immigration at the southern border, inflation and the economy, crime. they are even on who is best to protect democracy. on health care and abortion access joe biden has an edge. where biden stays honesty. do people see them as people or as people trying to solve these problems. we are seeing a divided country. >> george: no question about that rick klein, thank you very much. >> rebecca: we turn to the unrest on college campuses as graduation ceremonies become a flash point in the standoff happening nationwide. our chief national correspondent matt gutman is at usc with more. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. early yesterday morning police in riot gear tearing down a second pro palestinian encampment on campus at usc.

just over the past couple weeks over 2,000 arrests on college campuses. as you just mentioned, now that classes is over, the focus of the protests is turning to graduation ceremonies. this morning as commencement season gets under way college campuses facing turmoil amid protests. columbia officially canceling its university wide graduation ceremony continuing with smaller scale celebrations. at depaul university, duelling protests as pro israeli counter protesters met with pro palestinian demonstrators. dozens of officers lining the divide between both sides. >> free the hostages! >> reporter: in some places police cracking down. at usc in los angeles, law enforcement called in to dismantle any illegal pro palestinian encampment sunday saying it was spiralling in a dangerous direction. no arrests were made.

during the university of michigan's graduation dozens of students disrupting the ceremony waving palestinian flags. demonstrators marching through the aisles. carrying banners and chanting. overhead a plane flying a banner in support of israel. and this video live streamed by northeastern university students flashing messages in support of gaza. demonstrators at other universities clashing with authorities. saturday police arresting at least 68 pro palestinian protesters at the art institute of chicago who set up encampment in one of the gardens. in virginia officers in riot gear appearing to disperse this crowd using zip ties and pepper spray, arresting at least 25 people. schools are working hard to restore a sense of normalcy. ucla's chancellor announcing overnight that classes, work, events will resume in person starting this morning. usc, which has cancelled its

graduation and forbidden its muslim valedictorian from speaking now announcing a big graduation party here at the coliseum for the class of 2024. george? >> george: matt, thanks. latest on the israel/hamas war. cease fire talks have closed, no agreement in place as israel vows to move ahead with an operation in the city of rafah. marcus moore is on the scene in gaza. >> reporter: a very different feel today from just a couple days ago when those negotiations on a cease fire seemed promising. but this morning an impass remains with new developments in rafah. this morning israeli officials urging palestinians to evacuate parts of rafah ahead of an expected ground forces into the city where more than 1 million civilians have sought shelter during the war. this as new images show the attack on an israeli outpost near rafah. hamas publishing videos of rockets it fired over the border sunday.

the idf saying the shells landed in southern israel killing four israeli soldiers and injuring ten others. in response to the strike israel sealing off a crucial crossing for gaza bound aid just as the head of the world food program said there's a full blown famine in northern gaza. hope for a cease fire dimming after weekend talks. hamas' delegation leaving the meeting in cairo after demanding an ends to israel's bombardment and a complete withdrawal from gaza, something netanyahu says israel will not agree to. >> no decision by any international forum will stop israel from defending itself. >> reporter: and everyone watching very closely what's happening in rafah. israel saying it dropped flyers urging more than 100,000 people to evacuate but giving no timeline for that looming ground operation. >> robin: marcus, thank you very much for your reporting. now divine intervention when a frightening incident unfolded at

a church in pennsylvania. eva pilgrim has the story. >> church is a place where doors are open to everyone. sunday a man with a gun came through the doors. the pastor saying the gun man smiled at him before bringing the service to a stop with what happened next. this morning the dramatic video from a church's live stream showing the moment the pastor looked down the barrel of a gun. >> god had chosen -- stop. >> he said he's grateful to god to be alive. >> he actually pulled a gun. that's when i seen the gun. at that point i didn't have no time to think. it was just reaction, you know? duck and try to get out of the way of his line of fire. >> reporter: it was a gun man he had never seen before. interrupting sunday's sermon in north braddock outside pittsburgh. pastor germany said the man had come in and out of the church

several times before making eye contact with him, before standing up and pointing that gun at him. >> he pulled the trigger and a miracle of god happened that the gun gets jammed. that bullet had a name on it. >> reporter: one man putting his life on the line tackling the gun man. >> i just jumped up, pulled his arm down through his back and locked him up. >> reporter: the deacon pulling the gun away. >> i think that was an act of heroism if i have ever seen one. >> reporter: truly. as for the gun man, authorities found a body when they searched his home. no word on a motive. that mystery only deepening. the pastor tells us they will be back in church next week for service. guys? >> george: thank you very much. now our abc news exclusive. a 9-year-old boy saved his parents when their truck crashed during a tornado. we spoke to him and his father. lara has the story. hey, lara. >> lara: an unbelievable story,

george. your family truck crashes. you see that your parents are trapped inside and injured. it would have been understandable to be frozen in fear because they were in the middle of a tornado. instead this little boy acted quickly and saved their lives. >> i was really, really scared. >> reporter: this morning 9-year-old branson baker dubbed a hero after helping save his parents lives when they were caught in an ef-4 tornado. >> we got a tornado! >> lara: the storm tearing through oklahoma april 27th. branson and his parents racing for safety, driving to their friend's storm shelter. >> we could pretty much see the tornado within about a mile, two miles from us. as we turned, the tornado turned itself. >> lara: the tornado uprooting a tree hitting the bakers truck full force trapping wayne and lindy, but branson able to escape running over a mile to get help. >> soon as i went to go get help i said, don't die.

>> branson sprung into action really quick. he is a very courageous son. for a 9-year-old boy, not many adults would have done what he did. >> lara: wayne's brother johnny was on the phone with family as the collision happened. >> about that time you start hearing some beating on the glass, maybe hail. then the phone went violent. >> lara: johnny rushing to the scene, calling 911. first responders arriving and branson returning from help. wayne now recovering from back, neck and arm injuries. his wife lindy still in the hospital. it's little branson's heroic acts in the spotlight doing everything for his mom and dad. >> couldn't be more proud to be the father of a son that can accept a challenge that way. shows that he would go above and beyond for anyone. >> lara: agree. what a brave little boy. branson plays baseball.

he had a game the day after his parents were injured. he said he hit that home run and double play, he did it all for his mom and dad. i think his dad's right. not a lot of adults would have been able to think clearly and get it done. >> robin: such a special soul. all right. thank you, lara. coming up, gio -- climbing down the empire state building. you can't make this up. we're gonna check in live. >> george: and the former prosecutor in the election interference case speaking for the first time since leaving the case after his relationship with fani willis. first let's go back to ginger. >> ginger: one of the big reasons we've got such an intense tornado possibility later today is the clash of air mashes. up to 5 inches of snow in northern utah. some of the rockies getting a whole lot more. that clashes with record heat along the gulf. but look at the snow that's going to come. 6 to 12 inches in that pink area. one to two feet above.

down there? that's where i'm going. this is all to benefit outward bound a program that benefits kids who are, you know, getting out of their comfort zone. that's exactly what i'm doing right now. so, guys, i'm beginning my journey. >> robin: we'll check back in a little bit. >> george: we'll come back to him in a bit. now our exclusive with nathan wade. the former special prosecutor in the georgia election interference case was forced to resign over his relationship with fani willis. linsey davis sat down with him. >> linsey: he had a lot to get off his chest after spending 800 days on this prosecution of donald trump, he was forced to resign after a judge wrote a scathing opinion regarding his romantic relationship with the district attorney that was made public. we talk about a lot of things including what wade does and does not regret.

>> i want people to know the real me. >> linsey: for the first time since leaving the case, nathan wade is speaking out with his relationship with fani willis which forced his resignation from one of the biggest high profile legal battles in u.s. history. >> work place romances are as american as apple pie. it happens to everyone. but it happened to the two of us. >> linsey: do you regret it? >> i regret that that private matter became the focal point of this very important prosecution. this is a very important case. i hate that my personal life has begun to overshadow the true issues in the case. >> linsey: the relationship created a whirl wind of

distraction in the indictment of former president trump and 18 others for alleged election interference. some of whom have taken plea deals, while others, including trump, have pleaded not guilty. attorneys for some of the defendants argue wade and willis' actions disqualify them from trying the case, filing a mowing against the prosecutors and revealing the romance to the public. a washington post columnist wrote, what were they thinking? how could two seasoned attorneys embroiled in the prosecution of a president start a romance and not see trouble coming a mile away. what were you thinking in that moment? >> you know, again, you don't plan to develop feelings. you don't plan to fall in love. you don't plan to have some relationship in the work place. you don't set out to do that. those things develop organically. they develop over time.

and the minute we had that sobering moment, we discontinued it. >> linsey: for nearly one month after news of their relationship broke, neither prosecutor acknowledged it publicly. so for 25 days we didn't hear from you or district attorney willis. you're a public servant, getting paid by the state of georgia. why not say, okay, we'll make a statement, get on top of this? >> let me say this. my conversation here with you today is just that. it's nathan's conversation. i do not speak for the district attorney's office. i do not speak for their position. as a matter of fact, i am certain that they would rather me not be having this exchange with you. with that, i want to continue to protect the integrity of this prosecution. i don't want to say or do

anything that would jeopardize this case. >> linsey: the judge required wade to withdraw if willis wanted to stay on the case and ultimately determined that while georgia law does noted permit the finding of an actual conflict for simply making bad choices, wade and willis' action showed a tremendous lapse in judgment and created a significant appearance of impropriety. do you think that you've done any kind of damage to this case? >> none at all. >> linsey: even the public perception of it? >> there again, this takes me back to the initial statement that i made. my private life became the focal point of the case. my private life has nothing to do with the merits of that prosecution. >> linsey: one aspect wade said he wasn't prepared for was the intense public scrutiny and harassment he said he's faced. you didn't realize when you took the case your life was going to be under a microscope. >> i did not realize that my life would be in danger. the microscope, i don't have a problem with.

the truth is, you know, the worst that you could find was the fact that i had a relationship with someone or that i happened to be going through a divorce. that's okay. that's okay. i have nothing to hide. >> linsey: some of the attacks have come from the former president himself. is there any part of you that regrets that you gave him any aspect to say, oh, you have to question the credibility of this case because of the relationship between fani willis and nathan wade? >> so, while i will concede, ms. davis, that the relationship did not happen in ideal timing, i don't think that anything that occurred during the course of the relationship should cause

question as it would relate to the sufficiency of the indictment, as it would relate to evidence that was uncovered, may or may not be presented at trial. >> linsey: as of now there is no trial date set and it is unclear that donald trump for his co-defendants will go to court in georgia before election day. but wade is confident the case will move forward. >> there's going to be that day of reckoning where a fulton county jury there in fulton county, georgia, would have to make that decision. >> linsey: now one thing wade says he does regret is the impact the scandal has had on his adult children. he wants people to know that he was separated at the time of the relationship with fani willis and that he has total confidence in the prosecution of this case against trump moving forward. a lot to unpack. a lot more coming up on abc news prime tonight.

oklahoma city where there's a tornado outbreak threat right now. good morning, ginger. >> ginger: good morning to you, george. we'll get to both. let's start with the southeast texas flooding. unfortunately a young boy was killed in that flooding. at least 200 high water rescues when up to two feet of rain fell in less than a week. they're going to be dwindling that rain potential, but also the rivers take time to recede. the flooding will slowly go away. let's talk about oklahoma here. we are ahead of what will likely be a high risk something oklahoma hasn't seen for about three, four years. it's rare to get a high risk. you have to be underground to survive the types of tornados that will happen. this is a personal shelter. that's all it takes a small space under ground to survive these intense long track tornados. when we say long track, we mean on the ground for a long time. so wichita, norman, ft. sill, oklahoma city, we anticipate this area to see the bump up. boy it covers a large area. indiana, cincinnati. then eventually wednesday, robin, we get another storm and

another risk. very active here in the plains. >> robin: yes, it is. we want everybody to stay safe. ginger, thank you. now the investigation into the sudden death of a popular south carolina pastor's wife. john paul miller reportedly telling his congregation she took her own life. but her family demanding answers. eva is back with more. good morning again, eva. >> eva: good morning. her family and friends want to know what happened to her. we spoke to one of her friends who said she was texting with mica the night before her death. this morning questions growing around the unexpected death of the south carolina pastor's wife. >> there's got to be some accountability here. >> eva: 30-year-old mica miller was found dead at a state park in north carolina about an hour north of where she lived in myrtle beach. authorities opening an investigation into her death, but saying the community is not in danger.

that took care of those beautiful baby girls who are now all growed up. beautiful young ladies. you helped them get there. i wanted to ask you, maria is not with us today because she's busy doing what she does for us. but you are here. would you share what that experience meant to you and the experience of helping maria become a mom? >> i mean, it was absolutely validating. it was amazing. i do this type of work with joy and to get that love back was just phenomenal. i was grateful. >> i love maria. >> lara: very special lady. amazing. >> robin: oh, 2020. we all remember 2020 the pandemic. these three right back there, they were health care workers. they are also related. we have ashley, her sister joy, their cousin. two of you are empty nesters and one just started a new business. okay. tell us about the empty nesters

then the business. >> well, i'll tell you, it's bitter and sweet. we are so proud of them, first of all. we got them settled into college. they're doing very well. we are just enjoying each other and traveling and having date nights. >> robin: oh. nice. >> and i tucked my daughter in at hampton university in virginia. [ applause ] but we have made it. i have taken on the hobbies that i paid for her to have. [ laughter ] piano lesson, golf, and spending time with my wonderful husband. >> robin: and the new business you have. >> yes, new business. i'm not an empty nester yet. my son is 7. i have got a ways to go. my husband and i started a real estate investment company. rh investment group. so we're buying sixer uppers and flipping homes. just exciting. >> lara: good. >> robin: thank you again. 2020 was quite a year for all of us.

the way you all stepped in really meant so much. >> who's making the pancakes? >> robin: oh. >> lara: so great. i want to jump to 2022, robin. we honored a wonderful mom, erika, along with casey, the surrogate who enabled erika to become a mom and have that baby. now casey i understand it you are auntie casey to erika's twins. >> yes. >> lara: tell us a little bit about the experience, about your bond and just about sharing the moment with us. >> yeah. so the twins are now 2 1/2. they are funky and energetic and wild 2 1/2-year-olds. they're doing great. our lives, we're still very close. our lives though took a very exciting turn. i'll let erika share. >> we have a surprise. a couple months after the twins were born i got pregnant.

that's what everybody says. i was like, no. it does happen. so, yeah, i have a 13-month-old. six months later casey had a son, too. >> robin: wow. big family. big family. >> lara: sounds like you all need breakfast in bed again. [ laughter ] >> yeah. days are a little crazy. i have four altogether. she has three. just wild and crazy and chaotic. >> lara: i love that you are still so bonded. kids must love it. thank you again. >> thank you for having us. >> robin: the woman right next to you, 2013, nicole. right? >> yes. >> robin: i remember. i remember especially because we introduced you to the woman who donated bone marrow to your daughter, helping to save her life. how is your daughter doing? >> she's doing wonderful. she's progressing well. she's 12 years cancer free. >> robin: wow! [ applause ] >> she's in high school now, part of the drama club. doing her thing, hanging out with her friends.

you would never know everything she had been through. her donor is just a blessing. >> robin: that was a special morning for all of us. >> lara: absolutely. i'm going to go right to last year. i see that smile. you found out that you were nominated by somebody pretty special near and dear to your heart, your own momma nominated you. yes, yes. >> lara: what was that like, finding out that she was behind the big secret? >> pure joy and shock. my mom's my best friend. i gave her enough gray hair growing up. [ laughter ] it was an honor to have her give me that honor when i'm just a shadow of her and my late grandmother. i'm proud that she's proud of me. >> robin: lot of people are proud of you. >> thank you. >> robin: where's our 2021 winner? where's patricia? there you are. there we go. i see you over there. you were honored because you just give back to your community.
