lows, which >> is unseasonably cold for may indeed, we're looking outside at what we've got in san jose this morning with a few clouds on the horizon, but definitely mostly sunny skies. and we'll keep those around today. winds are a little bit lighter than they were last week, which is a nice touch, but it is a little bit colder than it was last week, too point raise petaluma santa rosa as well. sonoma all down in the upper 30's right now. a lot of the rest of us well down in the 40's. so don't forget that extra layer as you are venturing out later on today. daytime highs mid to upper 60's. pretty pleasant, feel very similar to yesterday. i'll get to the rest of your forecast talking a slow warm-up. all still ahead, michael's in for a morning. how's it going? >> hey, good morning, everyone. happy monday. not to slow this morning on the roads except for that bay bridge. of course, it's always sluggish there around this time, 20 minute commute from the maze into the city. and once you're getting to fremont street, but at the toll plaza, you can see lots of stopping go taking a look at the san mateo bridge

this morning. 18 minutes to get on to the peninsula. not too bad. the richmond sandra fell bridge. it's a 13 minute commute over that. and lastly, that golden gate bridge, it is going to be a 20 minute commute into the city. i will send it back to 2 of the 71 in the big story that we're following this morning is after months of controversy, waymo is announcing a it is now expanding to the pin is yeah, it's going to be testing. those driverless cars in 7 cities in total, one of them. where kron four's will. tran is standing by this morning. they will. >> yes, so don't be surprised if you see waymo roaming the streets in burlingame, the driverless car, but don't expect to anytime soon. unless you are an employee. it's going to happen over the next several weeks. and when it starts its employees only not just in burlingame but other cities, including say coma, brisbane, millbrae south san francisco. they are making its way down to the south bay and

a lot of people they don't like it. i can personally tell you that i interviewed a supervisor from san mateo county and he did not want waymo roaming the streets of san mateo county, especially if it's coming from san francisco. we're talking freeway speeds down to this location. but the california public utilities commission as well, this the dmv, they gave the green light to waymo to go ahead and move down the peninsula. despite all the controversy that's been taking place, not just in the bay area, but all over the state. know, los angeles in certain parts, they are pushing back in san francisco a couple of months ago. we saw a waymo vehicle set on fire. so they are pushing back in forms of legislation, but they want to do in santa clara county is introduced legislation that will allow local jurisdictions to ultimately make the decision kind of like, yes, the dmv, they control the

state license. they are the ones to give you the license to drive around. but it's local jurisdictions. they are the ones who set the speed limit. so they want to do that. but in the meantime, as they wait to hopefully get that through, you know, channels for the lawmakers to decide yes or no. we do know that waymo is coming down here. not exactly sure. james and area. the exact start date, but we've been told over the next several weeks. and if it works out well, you too. can book a waymo and hop inside. but for now its employees only back to you. and you know, after all this, i still have been in one gym. will have you ever been one of robo cars? >> absolutely not and i won't. >> one day may be your only option will see bank. you will. all for is a time. let's talk about cinco de mayo because there were big parties yesterday all around the bay. that's and san jose, especially where they have

>> now that detour on santa clara street bystanders police cars, a backup of cars for at least several hours where downtown san jose job moment kron. 4 news. unfortunately, cinco de mayo also saw a double stabbing this happened on the east side of san jose. 2 people are in critical condition from that. and as you can see, >> the police investigation shut down the roads while they take a look at what happened. it happened in response to sideshows they shut down the roads in this double stabbing happened around 5.30, in the area of south king road. ali do way. one was out that night said it was disappointing. >> would say i'm not phase, but is is just part of life. and, you know, unfortunately things like that happen that peuple do do things that are unfortunate. but i don't think the majority other people should suffer for it. happy cinco de mayo. god bless and protect those people that were no word on the attacker. as we

said, we're just monitoring the investigation. >> one person was killed when several cars crashed in san jose. a little after one in the afternoon. yes or sorry. one of the morning yesterday this crash happened on highway 101, near north mathilda avenue. so police shut down the lanes of 101, southbound where it happened as they investigated. and we don't have an id on the person who was killed. >> we're in the east bay, oakland police now investigating after a person was shot and killed near lake merritt. this is actually video from the citizen app. police say that shooting happened just before noon sunday on first avenue victim's identity not yet made public, but in that same area, a driver crashed into the parking lot at america's best value inn on east 12th street. and that's the video you see here. police haven't confirmed if the shooting and this crash are connected. but that's something they're looking into. meanwhile, police in oakland caught one person allegedly planning to take part in sideshows last night on cinco de mayo. o can please

share this on acts saying the driver was identified as a sideshow per for a promoter. they arrested him for recklessly evading police. opd says it had additional units out last night to preparing to respond to any sideshows. should they pop up? an arson investigation now underway following a fire that destroyed horn barbecue in oakland. it happened just a few days before thanksgiving of last year. and since then, the owner matt horn has maintained its restaurant was targeted by arson and officials have now confirmed that that fire was in fact, deliberately set, although no word on a suspect at this point. we do know that horn barbecue reopened last week as we reported, it's now part of horns. other restaurant called maddie's old fashion in downtown oakland. >> some appear on the iconic golden gate bridge, a testament to america's greatness. california's greatest. we could be more proud announce today. record breaking tourism numbers in

the state of california over 150 billion dollars tourism. spend unprecedented in our state's history. >> some high on the new numbers. so he was on the golden gate bridge where most people don't get to go with an amazing view of our iconic bridge, telling us about the tourism boost that california saw this year. the governor announced tourists spent more than 150 billion dollars in all of california the past year, which breaks the 144 billion dollar record set in 2019. so tourism statewide better than before the pandemic. governor newsom says not only is the state retaining its title as the world's 5th largest economy, just california and the world's biggest economy, 5th largest. it's also growing in population for the first time since the covid pandemic. taking a look at more data, the travel industry supporting about 1.2 million jobs last year, which is up 6%. tourists created 4% more revenue. then

in 2023 and spent about 5% more then the year before. now, while you made the big announcement on the golden gate bridge in san francisco when it comes to san francisco numbers, the city is not in full recovery mode since covid san francisco made about 13 billion dollars from tourism in 2023. a billion more than in 2022. but still a billion shy of the pre-pandemic record which was in 2019 when san francisco made about 14 million dollars on tourism. happening today is the first day of the rsa conference in san francisco. the annual cyber security expo. it returns to moscow knee center for 4 days. the speakers include officials from google, secretary of state antony blinken and there will be a special performance by alicia keys. very cool. >> it is 7.11. still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news campus protest continue as another bay area college

also trying to get their heart rates up because it's getting chilly. you want to stay warm as you're getting outside santa rosa at 39 degrees right now. rest of us at least mostly hanging out in the 40's. as for current conditions, it is clear out there for sure rain and snow for that matter has moved well out of the rockies. and in fact, we do see a chance of severe weather in the central plains today into the deep south as the system moves further inland for the state as well as the bay area. it's just going to be a nice try forecast ahead. nothing really in sight. high pressure ridge will build back in and this will contribute to be gradually warming forecast. in the meantime today it's upper 50's to low 60's at the coast. elsewhere in the day, it's pretty solid 60's burlingame at 64 redwood city. 67, san jose at 68 degrees today. east bay temperatures range anywhere from the low bid to upper 60's for your highs today. only a couple of low 70's and that's in fairfield and vacaville. these temperatures are way below average for this time of year.

there was also a group rallying in berkeley along interstate meantime, the rallies continue for palestinians on college campuses across the nation now. so we've got congress to lawmakers there. >> a bit divided on how best to handle the situation. our dc correspondent maddie beer-temple has more. >> both republicans and democrats, a violent protest is unacceptable, but they disagree over how president biden and some universities have responded. with graduation season under way. police are stepping in on some college campuses to clear encampments and break up clashes over the israel-hamas war. they should not have been allowed to fester on campus for 2 weeks. arkansas republican senator tom cotton told abc universities have been too slow to act. the liberal politicians refused to the police to clear them out the very first day the president addressed the protests at length for the first time last week. he denounced violence but said he supported peaceful protest.

>> his campaign co-chair told cnn the president believes all students should feel safe. president's been very clear about this. he's also been very strong about the need to stamp out anti-semitism and islamophobia. but florida republican senator marco rubio told fox news the president's comments came to lead a 7 days into this crisis that we should heard from from the very beginning. while president biden said the protests have not affected his policy when it comes to the war in gaza, california, democrat congressman ro khanna told cbs he thinks the protests have made a difference. everyone from the president on down is aware that young people are upset at what's going on in the middle east tonight. i do think its head it awakening in washington that this war has to end. >> so far more than 2000 protesters have been arrested since these protests started in mid april. >> in washington, i'm maddie beer-temple. >> 7.22. right now in coming up on the kron 4 morning news. how are kids going eat over

on college campuses supporting the palestinians in the war that's going on in over the weekend. got pretty battered by the rain. so they're repairing all of that. now. >> and preparing for what's coming up next hour. jack moment has more. >> well, some of the protests have been lasting for days, others weeks, but they're continuing to press forward here in the bay area with students wanting their schools to divest or be transparent about their financial ties with the nation of israel. but it may be quiet here in san jose state's campus. but pretty soon it may have its own protest as well. san jose's gearing up for graduation, but online, there's chatter about a pro-palestine protest happening on may. saw people next to health building just like painting a big sign. robert cleveland is graduating soon and says he supports the ongoing protests, possibly reaching his i feel like it needs to be it's not happening with the government. >> at

>> i mean, we're we're the ones that contain everything. coming up, head north to palo alto. this group of students a pro-palestine protest camp out on their campus. but i that everything's good posters soiled by the recent rain. but one pilots and tarps were able to keep students sleeping here. but friday evening, a counter-protester violated vigil of candles. students tell us. >> they say police responded and took the counter protester away. kron 4 reached out to stanford pd but did not hear back and also give them some support for to know that other people also thinking about mode at left-back lives in the area and donated supplies to stanford students. she says her daughters are part of the student encampments around the country and wants things to go peacefully. really don't understand why we're fighting. >> the students because all they're trying to ask for is for cease-fire back in san jose state. it's very like is very sad seeing it, especially when the asked people. robert cleveland says he supports the cause of pro-palestine student protests have thought about.

>> i have with my mom no, because you don't want and says he's looking forward to the possible protest this week. gen z in next group going to be future of the world, especially and we need to make a change now for not is not going to happen from the other san jose jack moment kron 4 news. >> well, in the east bay, oakland, police now offering a reward for anyone who has information about 2 homicides that took place years apart. but investigators think they might be connected. so police say multiple suspects are unconnected in connection out of this homicide of henry tejada and deshawn breaux roads. that's a hot it was shot and killed in april of 2020 near foothill and church. apparently a nissan armada without license plates was seen pulling up to him before multiple people got out and shot him. he was just 23 years old. that car was later recovered and beensa rental from reno, nevada. meanwhile, roads was also killed by gunshot in june of 2021. that occurred along lakeshore and

brooklyn right from lake merritt, as you can see here on the map, anyone with information about either case is asked to contact oakland police. >> the person who was involved in a standoff friday night on 80 in fairfield with the police remains in critical condition. now the chp says he shot himself originally, the chp reported that he had died. but now they say the medical teams were actually able to revive him when he got to the hospital. the standoff started after a multi-county pursuit that started in sonoma county on friday afternoon and eventually led to the police standoff that happened in fairfield. it shut down 80 in both directions for hours and that affected, as you can see a lot thousands of bay area drivers, the solano county da's office is now handling the investigation. do you have a right when you're on social media to control what you see and don't see in your feed. >> there's a lawsuit now that's been filed against

meta, arguing that the company should allow people to unfollow the content that is fed to them through facebook's algorithms. the lawsuit asked the court to determine whether a user's newsfeed falls into the category of objectionable material. and also they say it should be filtered out in order for people to be able enjoy the platform they want. the lawsuit comes after meta sent cease and desist letters to app developers who are in the process of creating a 3rd party software that would cleanse your timeline if you want. meta has declined to comment. >> okay. now to a story you'll see for stock fraud for health inspectors shut down a mcdonald's in oakland to investigate an alleged rat infested. yeah. and if you to order at mcdonald's, you're not going to like what these pictures show warning. it could be disturbing. >> i was right in the parking lot of a mcdonald's located at 13, 30 jackson street in

oakland. department employee started turning customers away who were inside and in the middle of the drive-thru. i asked what was the cause of the store closure. this was her response from the health department. they have some sanitation the season. they need to clean up. >> what did you find mind telling and this comes while 6 mcdonald's employees are actively on strike from this location due to what they say is an and healthy. >> working condition. now take a look at this video captured inside by a worker where you can see a live rat on the counter. now the mcdonald's employees say they have found rat eating food prepared for customers. the workers have now filed a formal complaint to cal osha with the help from the california fast food workers union. >> when i saw that he is i was a scare. that is disgusting. and so this is problem not just the employees working on these conditions, but also for the coastal the communities i

also spoke with the alameda county health department about these concerns. >> i was told the location did receive an annual inspection back in february and no violations were found. and once we share some of these allegations made by the employees, the department said they would be sending an inspector by to investigate. and that's what we saw on friday. and i did reach out to mcdonald's earlier before the store closure and they sent us this statement from the owner and operator joseph wong. it reads in part, it's important that employees have a safe place to come to work. when we became aware of the issue, we immediately contacted pest control and continue to work with them to address this. and we will continue to follow this story and we're hoping to learn more about what the next steps are for this mcdonald's location. in the newsroom. lezla gooden kron. 4 news. >> thank you. leslee 7.38. is a time in the south bay

highway 9 is going to be closing in saratoga for 3 days. starting on wednesday. caltrans says crews are going to be working on the saratoga creek bridge that road closure is going to be from 9 at night until 7 in the morning every night with construction expected to be wrapped up by saturday. >> it's and there's going to be a new entertainment zone in downtown san francisco. mayor bree just announced he's working to allow restaurants and bars to sell alcohol during outdoor events. >> and hang out with your friends and have a beer. >> and listen to music without going through some lengthy city process sound permit drama, stuff. i am trying to get rid of the bureaucracy which takes away the fun in what so many are small businesses are trying to create to continue to ensure that the vibrancy and the excitement of why people love san francisco remains.
