nice to mayo today. bright? yeah. luckily the weather opened up beautifully for cinco de on saturday. it did. then the skies opened up. you can see it's clear sailing or whatever you want fly. and today, yes, saturday was a rough one for sure. kinda felt like march or february. it was cold, windy and wet. >> and we saw abou- our entire month's worth of rainfall from a in just a few hours early. so it was something. but we cleared out yesterday and today we're staying that way. little bit breezy out there and definitely chilly on this clear morning. got the cruise ship pulled up there at the embarcadero on such a cool start to the day. look at some of these temperatures. in fact, earlier this morning, a few for coastal spots fill into the 30's pacifica and point raise down in the 30's earlier point race is still there. most of us are starting to see temperatures rise now. and that's due to just how clear it is out there. temperatures in the mid to upper 60's this afternoon. very similar to where we were yesterday. i'll be talking

gradually warming temperatures in the rest of the forecast. still ahead, michael thomas in for a this morning on the >> hey, good morning, everyone. happy monday. if you're heading out this morning, the roads don't look too bad. and for some drive times those who are heading over towards the maze this morning, the most you're going to see is at 32 minute commute. that's crockett to the maze using 5.80, walnut creek to 5, 80 14 minutes. castro valley to the maze. 23 minutes stanley under to the maze. 21 minutes and a live look at the bay bridge. well, parking lot this morning that toll plaza but only a 20 minute commute over that the bridge into the city. so things are looking good there. the san mateo bridge, a 24 minute commute on to the peninsula. taking a look at the richmond, sandra fell bridge. it's only 15 minutes and that golden gate bridge. everything is flowing into 32 minute commute into the city of san francisco. i will send it back to you, too, at the thank you. it's 08:00:02am. >> and the big story today following months of controversy, waymo is going to be in way more places. they're expanding to the peninsula.

they are crawford's will trend on the story for us live from burlingame, which i assume is one of those places these cars are headed well. >> it's one of those places. the other places include coleman millbrae south san francisco daly city. they are heavy way more south to the peninsula and eventually possibly into santa clara county as well. a lot of people are pushing back, but ultimately the california public utilities commission as well as the dmv, they gave the green light to waymo to expand into semi chaos. san mateo county and the peninsula. here's the reason why they are doing this because they want to obviously expand their services. it's basically a global company. what they want to do is reach down into the peninsula, possibly all the way into santa clara county without having a driver. that's the problem with san mateo county. as far as a couple of supervisors, i spoke to one supervisor and he did

not want that to happen because he said imagine hopping into a car that he already deems not safe and then it's going to go freeway speed down to the peninsula. but that's what's going to happen. waymo they know all the complaints, but they still will go ahead with this. this will happen over the next several weeks. not sure exactly when that will happen as far as the peninsula. but when it does, james and we do know its employees only they will monitor the situation. and after that, if it goes well, there's a good chance. i'm sure that it will expand to the public waymo just facing a lot of controversy. not just in. >> the bay area, but all across california as well. phoenix, arizona, they're dealing with way more problems as well as the technology wave will actually recalled some other services recently to look at their software. they think they're good to go now and again, this will happen in the peninsula. don't be

phase, but >> is is just part of life. and, you know, unfortunately things like that happen to people to do things that are unfortunate. but i don't think the majority other people should suffer for it at the scene where the mile. god bless and protect those people that were hurt. >> police have not released a motive or any information on the attacker. >> police in oakland caught one person allegedly planning to take part in a side show last night during cinco de mayo. local police shared this photo on x saying the driver was identified as a side show promoter and he was arrested for recklessly evading police. opd says it had additional units out last night to prepared to respond any sideshows that might pop up. and arson investigation is now underway following a fire that destroyed horn barbecue in oakland. it happened just a few days before thanksgiving last year and ever since the owner matt horn has maintained his restaurant was targeted by arson officials have not confirmed that the fire was in

fact, deliberately set no word on a suspect at this point. but as we know, horn barbecue did reopen last week. it's now incorporated into part of horns. other restaurant called maddie's or fashion in downtown >> some appear on the iconic golden gate bridge, a testament to america's greatness. california's greatest. we could be more proud announce today. record breaking tourism numbers in the state of california over 150 billion dollars tourism. spend unprecedented in our state's history. >> high on the golden gate bridge, the governor says how high tourism numbers are in the golden state. a huge boost to tourists a from tourists that the state got. the governor says that tourists spent more than 150 billion dollars in california this past year surpassing the 144 billion dollar record set in 2019 tourism is actually better than it was before the

pandemic statewide. and not only that, but he says the state is retaining its title as the world's 5th largest economy. and it's growing in population for the first time since the covid pandemic broke out. according to the latest data, the travel industry supporting about 1.2 million jobs last year. up about 6% tourist created about 4% more revenue than in 2023 and spent about 5% more. although the governor shows to announced a big boost in san francisco. the san francisco didn't get as big of a boost as it. we have statewide. we haven't recovered from covid completely. san francisco may just over 13 billion dollars from tourism in 2023, which is a billion more than in 2022. still, though, a billion shy of the pre-pandemic record which was recorded in 2019 of just over 14 billion dollars. it's a 10 and today is the first day of the rsa conference in san francisco.

it starts at 8.30 this morning and it is a four-day event. the annual cyber security expo returning to moscow. nice entering the speakers include officials from google, secretary of state antony blinken and a special performance from alicia keys. >> is asian american pacific. and pacific islander heritage month. and this weekend a korean american nonprofit celebrated 10 years of fundraising. the korean american community foundation of san francisco hosted its 10th annual honda gala last night at the ritz carlton. the event raises money for translation services, grocery deliveries for elder korean americans and scholarships for students this year. they're gallery recognized judge lucy koh with a trailblazing award. she's the first korean american woman to serve as a federal judge on the 9th circuit court in california and by the way, tune in to kron 4 every thursday this month for stories highlighting the bay area's api community.

southbound 6.80, dublin to fremont. it's only a 26 minute commute this morning, 8.80, some small congestion, but nothing major taking a look at drive times livermore to dublin, 14 minutes, dublin to fremont. 25 minutes san leandro to milpitas. 45 minutes again. that ad does have some congestion on the southbound lanes. peters to sunnyvale. only 8 minutes. taking a look at the antioch area. time has gone down there and to conquer. 31 minutes. and if you're heading in from the area down to the crockett, well, things good there. crockett to the maze westbound for westbound. 42 the westbound 80. it's 28 minute commute there. once you are in that area, if you decide to turn off over the richmond, sandra fell bridge. it's a 14 minute commute over that. taking a look at the bay bridge this morning. it's starting to clear up 14 minute commute into the city the maze this morning. those metering lights are still on san mateo bridge. 21 minute commute to get on to the peninsula. and lastly, that golden gate bridge. it is a 27 minute

commute into san francisco this morning. i'll send it back to 2 of the best. thank you. michael is 18 and sunday night marked the beginning of yom hashoah or holocaust remembrance day. state senator scott wiener's, you can see here was joined by community members last night at the san francisco jewish community center. >> to marc, this commemoration, which remembers the 6 million jews and million others who were killed in the holocaust. meantime, governor newsom is celebrating jewish american heritage this month. he said the california points out that we have the second largest jewish population in the entire country and he wants to recognize the resilience of the jewish people. also saying his administration is going to invest in security for houses of worship and other cultural centers to combat hate crime.

>> people as you can see here rallied in lafayette sunday to bring attention to the 100 hostages still being held by hamas in gaza. attendees say it's this rally is going to be reoccurring over highway. 24, they held up the american flag and israeli flags as well as photos of those who are still being held captive. they say they want israel and hamas to reach a deal to bring those hostages home. those rallying around the bridge for a couple of hours. >> was there is no more an why we now friday it's a as soon as possible. stop we to worry about >> well, there was also a group rallying in berkeley along interstate 80. you can see that here in this video. they were again pushing the same cause. meanwhile, san

jose state students are planning a rally in support of the palestinians in gaza and calling for a cease-fire. they're going to be doing this thursday on campus. the rally is expected to start about 12:30pm, in the afternoon it will likely not be the first demonstration that we see on campus in the coming weeks for the last, i should say, as students are still occupying grounds at sonoma state. san francisco state cal and stanford. >> and the protests over the war have overwhelmed many college campuses in the bay area and across the country. and lawmakers on capitol hill are but divided on how to handle it. we have our washington correspondent maddie beer-temple with the story. >> both republicans and democrats, a violent protest is unacceptable, but they disagree over how president biden and some universities have responded. with graduation season under way. police are stepping in on some college campuses to clear encampments and break up clashes over the israel-hamas war. they should not have been

allowed to fester on campus for 2 weeks. arkansas republican senator tom cotton told abc universities have been too slow to act. the liberal politicians refused to the police to clear them out the very first day the president addressed the protests at length for the first time last week. he denounced violence but said he supported peaceful protest. >> his campaign co-chair told cnn the president believes all students should feel safe. president's been very clear about this. he's also been very strong about the need to stamp out anti-semitism and islamophobia. but florida republican senator marco rubio told fox news the president's comments came to lead a 7 days into this crisis that we should heard from from the very beginning. while president biden said the protests have not affected his policy when it comes to the war in gaza, california, democrat congressman ro khanna told cbs he thinks the protests have made a difference. everyone from the president on down is aware that young people are upset at what's going on in the middle

their hands and feet at various ports in piedmont sunday. it was the play like a girl tournament. the 3rd time that piedmont recreation has thrown this athletic festival. watch this. >> and you gotta do these trails like football players, all kinds of stuff. they got stuck. >> 29 different sports. little taste of boxing here. yeah. bring it on. how about roller derby? they even got try skates on and try in hands fencing. look at that. they met with pro athletes and olympians are they're gonna roll with those us capers and boom right over but pop right back up. and it was a chance to get girls excited about a big variety of sports. how to get kids their meals over the summer. the san francisco free summer meals program returns this year. it starts june 10 through august 16th and it gives the kids under 18 a chance to be able to have free breakfast and free lunch all summer long while they're not in school, relying on school lunches, more than 75 different locations hand out

thank you, michael. a 31 and students around the bay are continuing their protests on college campuses supporting the palestinian people amid the war that's happening in gaza. yeah. over the weekend with the stormy weather, as you can see, it did a little damage to the recovered from that. they're also preparing for what's to come next round was jack moment has more. >> well, some of the protests have been lasting for days, others weeks, but they're continuing to press forward here in the bay area. >> with students wanting their schools to divest or be transparent about their financial ties with the nation of israel. but it may be quiet here in san jose state's campus. but pretty soon it may have its own protest as well. san jose's gearing up for graduation, but online, there's chatter about a pro-palestine protest happening on may. saw people next to help building just like painting a big sign. robert cleveland is graduating soon and says he supports the ongoing protests, possibly reaching his i feel like it needs to be i wasn't. it's not happening with the government.

>> at >> i mean, we're we're the ones that contain everything. coming up, head north to palo alto. this group of students a pro-palestine protest camp out on their campus. but i that everything's good posters soiled by the recent rain. but what im pallets and tarps were able to keep students sleeping here. but friday evening, a counter-protester violated vigil of candles. students tell us they say police responded and took the counter protester away. kron 4 reached out to stanford pd but did not hear back and also give them some support for to know that other people also thinking about moment live act lives in the area and donated supplies to stanford students. she says her daughters are part of the student encampments around the country and wants things to go peacefully. really don't understand why we're fighting the students. >> because all they're trying to ask for is for cease-fire back in san jose state. it's very like is very sad seeing it, especially when the ask people. robert cleveland says

he supports the cause of pro-palestine student protests have thought about. >> i have. but my mom said no, because you don't want and says he's looking forward to the possible protest this week. gen z and annex group are going to be the future of the world, especially and we need to make a change now for about it is not going to happen from the other san jose jack moment kron 4 news. >> in the east bay, oakland, police now offering a reward for anykne who has information on 2 homicides that took place about a year apart. they believe they might be connected to police say multiple suspects now connected to this homicide of henry tejada and sean roads. tejada was shot and killed back in april of 2020 near foothill and church. a gray nissan ramada, their armada without license plates was seen pulling up next to him and multiple people got out and shot him. he was just 23 years old. that car was later recovered and trace back as a rental from reno roads was

also killed by gunshots and that was in june of 2021. a year later that was on the lakeshore in brooklyn, right in front of lake merritt. as you can see here on the map, anyone with information about either case is asked to contact oakland police. it 34 and the person who was involved in a stand-off with police on 80 in fairfield remains in critical condition right now. >> the chp says he shot himself in originally they thought he had died. but they now say that medical teams were able to revive him when he got to the hospital. the standoff started after a multi-county pursuit that started in sonoma county friday afternoon and then led to a police standoff in fairfield which shut down 80 in both directions for hours and that affected thousands of bay area drivers. the solano county da's office is now handling the case. do you have a right when you're on social media to control what you see and don't see on your feed. there's a lawsuit that was just filed against meta, arguing that. >> they should allow people to

unfollow all of the content fed on facebook's algorithm. the lawsuit asked the court to determine whether or not users newsfeeds fall into the category of objectionable material. and this lawsuit says they should be able to filter out in order to enjoy the plant from the lawsuit comes. >> after medicine to cease and desist letter to some app developers working on a 3rd party software that would cleanse eta has declined to comment on the lawsuit. >> what a story you'll see first on kron, 4 health inspectors shut down a mcdonald's in oakland to investigate. >> police employ snap some photos that you may find disturbing. we're going to take a look at them with kron four's. let's look good. i was right in the parking lot of a mcdonald's located at 13, 30 jackson street in oakland when a health department employee started turning customers away, who were inside and in the middle of the drive-thru, i asked what was the cause of

the store closure. this was her response from the health department. they have some sanitation the season. they need to clean up. >> what did you find you mind telling >> and this comes while 6 mcdonald's employees are actively on strike from this location due to what they say is an unhealthy working condition. now, take a look at this video captured inside by a worker where you can see a live rat on the counter now that mcdonald's employees say they have found rat eating food prepared for customers. the workers have now filed a formal complaint to cal osha with the help from the california fast food workers union. >> when i saw that he is i was his is disgusting. and so this is problem not just the employees working on these conditions, but also for the coastal the communities i also spoke with the alameda county health department about these concerns. >> i was told the location did

receive annual inspection back in february and no violations were found. and once we share some of these allegations made by the employees, the department said they would be sending an inspector by to investigate. and that's what we saw on friday. and i did reach out to mcdonald's earlier before the store closure and they sent us this statement from the owner and operator joseph wong. it reads in part, it's important that employees have a safe place to come to work. when we became aware of the issue, we immediately contacted pest control and continue to work with them to address this. and we will continue to follow this story and we're hoping to learn more about what the next steps are for this mcdonald's location. in the neosroom was going kron. 4 news. >> thank you. leslie was a 38 is the time highway 9 is going to be closing in saratoga for the next 3 days are should say for 3 days starting on wednesday, caltrans says they need to do some work on the search, took a creek bridge
