birthday oakland. we're looking forward to tipping off. did you know that saturday marked 172 years since oakland became an official city? and as you saw several big names, oakland natives and organizations wished a happy birthday to oakland. oakland was incorporated by the california state legislature on may the 4th, 1852, officially making it a city. well, hundreds of young girls gathered in piedmont over the weekend for the third annual play like a girl event. it was a free event. it offered 29 sports workshops, from fencing to roller hockey girls. between two and 18 were able to interact with women coaches and even some olympians. this year there was also a firefighter fitness station and a sports equipment swap. organizers say it offered a unique opportunity to find a new passion after a deadly shooting

in broad daylight near oakland's lake merritt. what we're learning about a car crash following the shooting for separate tow trucks in the east bay, catch fire. why investigators suspect arson in at least two of the cases, and the surveillance video that shows one man driving away after flames start. then leadership at one bay area university set to meet with pro-palestinian protesters. what they want from the university's president as other schools nationwide cancel commencement ceremonies in response to protests from ktvu. fox two news this is mornings on two. good morning. i'm gasia mikaelian and good morning, i'm dave clark. it is monday. it's may 6th. i started to call you and tell you it's cold today. you didn't have to tell me twice. i thumped it as soon as i walked out. well, steve's talking about this. how it feels now? well, for us on may 6th, it is cold. we have a lot of 30s here. teeny bit of fog, san jose's has some low clouds, maybe santa rosa, but there are 39 degrees, there's a lot of
7:02 am
upper 30s. we even had 36 petaluma airport, penngrove sonoma state university. i think sonoma briefly dipped to 36, but it'll be nice today that we're on the back edge of all this. so mostly sunny today. looks good. a new moon on monday. well, almost the noon moon will be tomorrow, but we're close enough. lots of sun. there will still be a little breeze today. temperatures will be in the 60s, but warmer weather will kick in by wednesday. well, let's hope the wild boys are not out there impacting the morning commute. but to tell us for sure, here's sal. well, no, this commute has not come undone yet. steve however, thank you. it is a little bit slow in some areas and almost did earlier with a crash on 680 westbound highway four. as you can see, is pretty typical. no major problems here on highway four, but it's slow from the pittsburgh exits. all the way to concord. and if you're driving at the bay bridge, it is backed up to the mays. metering lights are on. traffic is going to be okay on the bridge. we don't have a lot

7:04 am
demonstrations at usc. that's just a few days after police arrested hundreds of people at ucla, closer to the bay area. encampments at places like stanford and berkeley are still in place. no words from police or those universities if they plan on targeting those protests. campus is still shut down at cal poly humboldt, where just about a week ago, officers went in to arrest about 30 protesters that caught the attention of the american civil liberties union. and attorneys for the aclu sent a letter to the school administration demanding that not only campus reopen, but be open to visitors and journalists trying to cover those events. according to the chronicle, the school announced that it would hold its graduation ceremonies this friday at locations off campus. now, we've seen graduation disruptions at college campuses all throughout the country over the last weekend. it happened in austin during a ceremony there where many protesters walked in on that and a number, columbia university rather now announcing
7:05 am
as of this morning that they will not be holding any campus wide ceremonies. berkeley will have its ceremonies coming up this upcoming weekend. sf state plans to hold that later. toward the end of the month. and those student protesters and that suspected meeting with its university president, that's expected to happen later this afternoon at about 1:00. we're live this morning from san francisco state university. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. all right, james, thank you. time is 705 new this morning. columbia university just canceled its main commencement ceremony scheduled a week from this wednesday. all of this, after all of the protests on that college campus. now, columbia plans to replace the university wide event with a smaller scale celebration. the administration says the decision was made after meeting with student leaders. now, news agencies in new york city report that six city concerns were the main reason for that announcement. cal poly humboldt
7:06 am
has changed its plans for commencement ceremonies following a week long protest and campus closure. the university will now hold ceremonies at three different off campus locations in eureka. the university leaders closed the campus after protesters barricade themselves inside an administrative building. well students at ucla are heading back to classrooms this morning to resume in person instructions. the campus went to remote learning during last week's campus protests and demonstrations tied to the war in gaza. more than 200 people were arrested last thursday as police in riot gear cleared out the pro-palestinian encampment, and republican leaders in the california legislature, where they're getting into the political debate over the growing number of protests and demonstrations on college campuses, related to the war in gaza. they want the state to immediately end all financial aid for any protester found to have committed violent or criminal acts during a campus demonstration. republican leaders also blame university

administrators statewide for not shutting down the encampments sooner. one person is dead after a shooting near oakland's lake merritt. police responded to reports of a shooting near east 12th street and first avenue around noon yesterday. they found one person who'd been shot, citizen app video here shows the victim's car crashed in a parking lot, the east bay times reports. someone was driving down the street when they were shot, then later crashed into a fence. the victim died at the scene. police have not released any information on a motive and there have been no arrests. two people, including a minor, are in the hospital this morning after a double stabbing in san jose happened around 530 yesterday, not far from where story road and king road meet. police say one of the victims was a minor, was taken to the hospital for his injuries. the second victim has life threatening injuries right now. police say it's unclear what led to the attacks so far, no arrests have been reported. time is now 707. investigators in concord still searching for answers after four tow trucks went up in flames and concord and in bay point. at least two

7:38 am
compared to four years before the report says, quote, adjusted for inflation, travel spending in 2023 was down 14% from the peak in 2019. even so, governor gavin newsom touted the statewide tourism spending numbers as a win in this video. he circulated on social media over the weekend. magnificence of the san francisco bay. what a perfect place to announce our record breaking tourism numbers. now the tourism money spent varies by region here in the bay area. for example, in 2023, tourists spent 37.7 billion, down slightly from the $39 billion spent in 2019. they're less busy. before it was packed right now it's not. the important thing is people are spending and you know, that's a plus, right? hopefully it's going to pick up. one bright spot in the report, it says that 98% of travel industry jobs that existed here in california
7:39 am
before the pandemic have now returned. and the report tries to strike an optimistic tone by saying those tourism jobs should count as part of the recovery or a sign that the tourism sector has recovered at least for the most part in california since 2020. live in san francisco ali rasmus ktvu, fox two news. thank you. ali 738. maybe we're trying to get from oakland to san francisco or across the peninsula. let's see what sal has to share when it comes to traffic issues. yeah, oakland to san francisco. garcia and dave is a little slow. it's not unusual. and right now it is backed up to the maze metering lights are on. we saw a temporary slowdown in the carpool lanes, but i'm happy to say that didn't turn out to be much. and traffic is back to normal in those lanes. highway four is slow and so is 680, and we're getting some slowdowns from el sobrante into richmond and berkeley. and we also see some slowing now in san jose and to the west valley, which again, typical. but i really like when

7:52 am
hesitate to say the commute has come undone. but look for four separate crashes between fremont and milpitas. some of them are minor, but the backup is beginning to build. so we have been okay, but now we have a lot of slow traffic. if your drive is, let's say from hayward or san leandro or that part of the east bay down to san jose, give yourself extra time. i know it's a tough it's a tough ask in the morning. 751 let's bring steve back in with today's weather for is that one on 880? yes. wow yeah. so it's just it's just not very good i can tell. thank you sir. what's not very good will be the severe weather, level five, high risk five. rare to get that from storm prediction center. the key is the low coming out of the rockies. you can see the circulation. let me put the wind coming right out of the rockies. then it goes out into the plains. and what happens is you get called the low level jet stream that comes out of the gulf that's carrying very high moisture content. and
7:53 am
then you have cold air coming in off of here. and the collision of these two is going to make for a wild bad day. probably tornadic activity, oklahoma mainly also into kansas, but especially oklahoma. they are telling people probably a good idea to stay home today, that's how severe it's going to be. the low that we had is churning. you can see there that's giving snow to parts of montana, but we are on the drier side. and also the colder side had a lot of 30s this morning now seeing 40s, 50s. it doesn't take long this time of year to warm up. after the unseasonably cold system. we had on saturday, saturday afternoon, many of the temps were around 48 degrees, which is just amazing to see, for saturday. but we've rebounded from that. the dry pattern is now going to kick in for at least a bit. i don't think we're done with rain though, the key though is that how much this low back tracks coming in, there will be a piece of energy breaking off from that. we will get a slight offshore breeze. i think the gfs is a little too bullish on that. others are not as robust, but it will be warmer
7:54 am
starting wednesday and thursday. today though, looks nice. 60s on the temps to near 70. you can easily pop into 70 by the time you get to may 6th, and we will tomorrow then. warmer weather wednesday thursday for sure. we'll see how much as we go into the end of the week. fog will be back probably by the weekend. steve, thank you. pro-palestinian protesters say they're getting a major concession today from one bay area university. we're live in san francisco, where negotiations will resume in just a few hours. also, while wildfires are likely the last thing on our mind right now after all that rain we got saturday, local agencies say now is the time to prepare. the most important steps homeowners can take to protect their homes and families is. every night at ten. it's a shared experience. i am amazed at how the community has come together, an experience that reflects the soul of the bay area. when we met, we felt that kindred spirit. it's an experience that gives us all the power to see the big picture. the 10:00 news on ktvu. sweet james is not a typical name for

for joining us. i'm andre senior. good morning. i'm gasia mikaelian. it's monday, may 6th. the world got a power wash. at least the bay area did on saturday steve paulson today feels chilly still, but a lot clearer out there. much more so it will be nice. we're back into a quiet pattern. i don't think we're done with rain though, but we're done for this week, that's for sure. 40s now, low 50s on the temps, teeny bit of fog around san jose, but there was a noticeable chill this morning. a lot of 30s for lows, just in a monster low that we had on saturday is going to cause unbelievable amount of severe, severe weather about northern texas, oklahoma, especially up into kansas. maybe nebraska for us though. new moon on monday, although it's almost because it will be new moon tomorrow, but lots of sun today. breezy, a little bit warmer, 60s on the temps, but we'll be warmer starting tomorrow. well, all she wants is a smooth commute, but if she's on 880, she's not getting it. yeah, it's come undone. there steve. unfortunately. southbound 883 or 4 separate crashes heading down through fremont and into milpitas. now it could be a lot
8:02 am
worse. the crashes weren't that serious. people are going so slow anyway. but if you're driving from hayward to san jose and you're using 880, it's not great. some people are using the san mateo bridge when they get over there. highway 92 at 101, there's a crash there right at that change. dumbarton bridge looks like the best option. let's talk about interstate 880. you can see northbound traffic there. looks okay heading up toward the coliseum and that the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up all the way out to the maze. 801 let's get back to the headlines. so thank you. across california, pro-palestine demonstrations continue on many college campuses. at san francisco state, student and faculty protesters expected to meet today with the university's president, ktvu james torres is at the sf state campus to tell us about the latest on the protests there. james andre, good morning. well, behind me, you can see what those demonstrations look like. it's really not all that different from any other campus that we've seen over the last few weeks. you see the number of tents that
8:03 am
are pitched here, still somewhat out of the way of many students who are walking over to their classes, their final exams later this morning, while students here who are part of that demonstration say that they have successfully convinced the school's president, lynn mahoney, to come out here to the encampment later this afternoon for what they call an open bargaining session. we are asking the university to confirm that statement here. it's an example of how many different directions those protests could go. very different story down in southern california over the weekend when police went in to break down the demonstrations at usc. that's just a few days after police arrested hundreds of people at ucla, closer to the bay area. encampments at stanford and berkeley are still in place. no word on any plans from the local police department or from the university officials on if they are going to target or try to break down those encampments. campus is still shut down at cal poly humboldt, where just about a week ago, officers went in to arrest about 30 protesters that caught the
8:04 am
attention of the american civil liberties union. and attorneys for the aclu sent a letter to school administration demanding the campus be reopen and to not just visitors, but the journalists trying to cover those protests as well. according to the chronicle, the school announced that it would hold its graduation ceremonies this friday at locations off campus. now, we've seen graduation disruptions at college campuses across the country over this last weekend. it happened in austin and columbia university this morning announcing that it is canceling its campus wide commencement ceremonies as well. you'll hear more about that coming up in just a few minutes. uc berkeley is still planning on having its ceremonies this weekend, and sf state, well, that's not happening until closer to the end of the month. now, the student protesters here tell me that they plan to meet with the university president later this afternoon at about 1:00. we're live this morning from san francisco state university. i'm james torres, ktvu fox two news. james, thank you. and as, of course, we heard james just mentioned a few moments ago, new
8:05 am
this morning, columbia university just canceled its main commencement ceremony, scheduled a week from this wednesday. this comes after sustained protests on that college campus. the school plans to replace a university wide event with smaller scale celebrations there in new york. the administration says this decision was made after consulting with student leaders, news agencies in new york city, reporting that security concerns were the prime reason for the change. and students at ucla are heading back to the classroom this morning to resume in-person instruction. the campus went to remote learning during last week's protests and demonstrations tied to the war in gaza. more than 200 people were arrested last thursday as police officers in riot gear cleared out the pro-palestine encampment. ucla says it's created a new position to oversee campus safety. following all the incidents last week, and republican leaders in the california legislature are stepping into the political debate over the growing number of demonstrations on college campuses to the war in gaza. they want the state to immediately end all financial aid for any protester found to have committed violent or criminal acts during a campus

demonstration. republican leadership also blames university administrators across the state for not shutting down the encampments sooner. one person is dead after a shooting near oakland's lake merritt. police responded to reports of a shooting near east 12th street and first avenue at about noon yesterday. they found a person had been shot. citizen app video here shows the victim's car crashed in a parking lot. a second victim died at the scene. police have not released any information on a motive so far. no arrests. two people, including a minor, are in the hospital after a double stabbing in san jose. it happened around 530 last night. not far from where story road and king road meet. police say the minor who was attacked was taken to the hospital for his injuries. the second victim has life threatening injuries. right now. it's unclear what led to the attacks. so far, no arrests. well, investigators are searching for answers after four tow trucks went up in flames in concord and bay point over the weekend. at least two of those fires are being investigated as arson. they all started early saturday morning. security camera video captured one of the fires on summerfield drive in

bay point. it shows a tow truck bursting into flames and one man getting into a car and racing away from the scene. this grainy security camera video shows another tow truck fire on saint clair avenue in concord, and you can see the flames and the far right corner of your screen. they're lining it up. a local towing company says all four of these trucks destroyed in these fires belong to their fleet. anyone with information is asked to call contra costa county fire investigators. driverless vehicles are heading to the peninsula. waymo is expanding its robotaxi service in the next few weeks. the pilot program will only be available to waymo employees. at first, they'll be able to order trips from san francisco to san mateo and burlingame, but they'll have to stay off the freeway. the expansion comes as state and local leaders wrangle over control of autonomous vehicles. lawmakers are currently pushing for a bill to give local governments the power to regulate robo taxis. the bill is set for a hearing today. 807 now, the golden gate bridge district is changing its financial plan in response to changing commuting trends. now,
8:08 am
